Default problem with excel page settings in office for osx and windows xp

I presently use two operating system platforms Mac OSX and Microsoft Windows
XP both using Microsoft Office. However when transfering files (usually
Excel) from one machine to the other I find that the page layout changes and
I have to reformat pages, margins and text sizes to fit the page. Is there
any way to overcome this problem?

There's no foolproof way to do this - XL isn't a layout program on
either platform - but you can minimize problems if you:

- use the same fonts, including the Standard Font, on both
platforms. Use only fonts which are included with Office for Mac (you
don't say which version, but both Office v.X and Office 2004 come with
dozens of MS fonts).
- use the same printer driver (XL uses the chosen printer driver for
layout)
- avoid the use of fractional size fonts - I don't think this should
matter, in theory, but it seems to exacerbate some fit problems.

If you're concerned about screen presentation, recognize that while both
platforms use 72 points per inch for printing, Windows uses 96 dpi for
screen display while Macs use 72 dpi, so something that displays well on
a Windows screen will appear compressed on a Mac. Usually changing zoom
fixes that.
