Hello All!

I have a fairly simple 2002 spreadsheet with one graph. It is not
important but, if I simply open the workbook and try to close it without
changes, I am asked if I want to save it. I wonder where I should be
looking for the cause?

In Excel-ese, you have a "volatile' function in the workbook
Let's see a simple example: suppose you have =TODAY()
Everytime the workbook is opened Excel must recalculate it so when you go to
close it you are asked for a save - it is not the YOU did something but
rather EXCEL did something.

Hi,

Maybe you have a formula like =NOW() in the workbook that changes when the
workbook recalculates on opening.

Thanks Bernard, I had suspected something of the sort but I could not
find a likely function. In an effort to find the problem, I made a copy
of the worksheet by means of "Save as" , and was told when trying to
close that without changes that

"Your formula contains an invalid reference to a worksheet.
Verify ......."

I'll admit that I could have such a reference because the worksheet was
made by copying an earlier one and replacing the data but the message
about the invalid reference only occurs once, on the first attempt to
close and I have not found the cause so far. As I said, the only problem
is being asked if I want to save but it's a puzzle if only a minor
nuisance. The problem may lie with a NETWORKDAYS function that is used.
I replaced the function with DATEDIF and the messages stopped.
