Has anyone experienced the problem of a drop-down or command button 'growing'
or 'shrinking' with each mouse click? It is as though Excel 2003 has a mind
of its own.

Yes, I have had that as well, but my case was with the Calendar
Control, never did find a solution to that problem though.

Lots of people have reported the same problem.

I think the problem went away (just temporarily????) if they deleted the old
controls and added back replacements.

You may want to consider replacing the controls from the Control Toolbar with
controls from the Forms toolbar.

They behave differently (so your code will change). The properties are
different (so you may not have all the formatting you had before).

But I think they behave much nicer.
