How do I prevent (r) from changing to registered symbol?

In xl2003 menus:

Tools|autocorrect options|autocorrect tab
Look for (r) and delete that entry.

You could also hit Edit|Undo (or Ctrl-z) to change it back as soon as excel
"helps" out.
