putting a name in the name box

I have a worksheet that is quite large. I have a cell that is below the
viewing part of the worksheet when you first open a file. I woul dlike to put
a name of the information in the NAME BOX, that is just above cells A & B. I
have highlited the cell (A67) I want name, then put my cursor in the name
box, type in my name of the cell (250 service). When I hit the enter key, I
get an error message "you must enter a valid reference you want to go to,or
type a valid name for the selection". If I enter just "service" it will
accept it. Can I use the name " 250 service". Is it just a case of formating
the cell to accept the numbes in the name???? Open to ideas.

Thanks
Don

Answer: putting a name in the name box

Hi Don,

It sounds like you're trying to name a cell in Excel and then have that name appear in the Name Box at the top left of the worksheet. The Name Box is used to display the name of the currently selected cell or range of cells.

When you try to enter "250 service" as the name for the cell A67, Excel is giving you an error message because it doesn't recognize "250" as a valid name for a cell. In Excel, cell names must start with a letter, not a number.

To name the cell "250 service", you can try the following steps:
  1. Click on cell A67 to select it.
  2. Click on the Formulas tab in the ribbon at the top of the Excel window.
  3. Click on the Define Name button in the Defined Names group.
  4. In the New Name dialog box, type "service" in the Name field.
  5. In the Refers to field, type "=A67" (without the quotes).
  6. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Now, when you select the cell A67, the Name Box should display "service" instead of "A67". If you want to change the name to "250 service", you can follow these steps:
  1. Click on the Formulas tab in the ribbon at the top of the Excel window.
  2. Click on the Define Name button in the Defined Names group.
  3. In the New Name dialog box, change the Name field to "250 service".
  4. Click OK to close the dialog box.

Now, when you select the cell A67, the Name Box should display "250 service" instead of "A67".

You can't have spaces in the name... maybe use an underline character
instead...
