Drag & Drop difference?

Can anyone tell me why there are times when dragging and dropping a single
date or number down a column causes it to advance, but then other times the
value stays the same??? Are there settings to control this function?

I've given up trying to remember.

If I'm not sure (99.9% of the time), I'll rightclick on the autofill button and
drag.

When I let go of the button, I'll see options that I can use.

Excel generally does OK if a single date is entered and dragged.

Does not do well if a single number is entered and dragged.

OK with two numbers selected and dragged..........the sequence is
recognized.

Custom Lists are also recognized when a single item is entered.

As Dave points out............right-click and drag gives you options.
