Sort ascending requires merged cells to be the same size.

The list of names that I tried to sort does not have any merged cells.
Please tell me what might be wrong.

You must have merged cells. Select a worksheet range object (like a column,
row, or entire sheet) then go to menu - Format - Cells - Allignment and
unclick the Merged Cell box.
