book.xltx and sheet.xltx

Hello! Friends:

I hope someone could help:

I have both EXCEL2003 and EXCEL2007 installed in my PC (Vista Business).
Recently when I opened EXCEL2003, I always got an error message, and upon
further investigation, it pertains to the 2 files book.xltx and sheet.xltx.

That means my EXCEL2003 always assesses these 2 files first before showing
the first workbook (book1.xls). How can I remove these errors? I had
uninstalled and re-installed the OFFICE2003, but the error persists.

Also, after I opened EXCEL2007, it takes a long time to exit when I clicked
close (the cross at the top right corner). Wonder whether this is related to
the issue mentioned above.

Many thanks.

First, I don't have two copies of xl on my pc. This may not work. But it
shouldn't take too long to test.

I would open both versions of excel (one at a time) and find out where excel
wants my XLStart folder.

Hit alt-f11 to get to the VBE
hit ctrl-g to see the immediate window
type this
?application.startuppath
and hit enter.

Make sure that the .xltx files are only in the XLStart folder for xl2007--and
nowhere else (use windows search to verify).

Hello! Dave

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Following your instructions and upon investigation, I found that BOTH XL2003
and XL2007 starts from the following path:

...../Appdata/Roamimg/Microsoft/Excel/XLSTART (contains the book.xltx and
sheet.xltx)

In other words, my XL2003 is NOT started from where I want it to be, which is:

Program File/Microsoft Office 2003/OFFICE11/XLSTART/book.xlt

Any remedy to this? Thanks.

Hi,

I'm not sure about this Roamimg stuff, but I would delete any files in that
XLStart folder. If you want custom files to start at startup save them to
C:\Program Files\Micsoft Office\Office11\XLStart (for 2003) and
Office12\XLStart (for 2007).

These are the standard setup folder for Excel. When you install Excel 2007
it should always follow the installation of 2003 not the other way around.
Second you should make sure that you do not wipe out prior versions when you
do the install. And finally, I prefer to force the Installation to a folder
of my choosing, for example, when asked if I want to change to location of
the install, I do, to something like a folder C:\Program Files\Micsoft
Office2007

If this helps, please click the Yes button

cheers,
Shane Devenshire

I don't know.

Maybe someone who runs xl2003 and xl2007 on the same pc will chime in.

Hi! Everybody:

Thanks for all the helpful advices.

I managed to solve the problem by moving the *.xltx files from the
ROAMING/.../XLSTART folder to the ..../Office12/XLSTART folder. All things
are now in place.

Many thanks.

My mistake..........still running WinXP

I see you got sorted by using the Office12\XLSTART folder.

Just for my own curiousity...

Are those folders the ones that were returned when you did the:
?application.startuppath
stuff in the immediate window of the VBE (in both versions of excel)?

Dave:

Yes. Strangely, both versions returned the same path,
...../Appdata/Roamimg/Microsoft/Excel/XLSTART, which contains the *.xltx files.

And XL2003 accesses these files first, hence the errors. After emptying the
folder, the problems solved.

I would have guessed (and did!) that each version would point at a different
