lost formatting
 

When I export sheets from databases or Crystal reports, normally none of the
formatting buttons on the sheet work. To change decimals, or $ I have to go
to the format/cell. Or I copy the sheet and past values on a new sheet.

is there any way to clear whatever it brings with it so it works?

You are probably exporting a CSV file which is just text seperated by commas
and has no formating. To format the sheets you 1st have to perform a SAVEAS
to a XLS filename. Then format the XLS file.

The option is export to excel, and it opens in an excel file with an xls
extension. I can save it and open it, changing names if I want, but I still
can't format it.

Can yuu add data to empty cells? The Worksheet/Workbook may be protected.
It may or may not have a password. The password in excel can easily be
broken. do a search for lost password to get a macro that will break the
password.

No password, no protection. I can add to it, sort it, multiply, etc. I can
run macros on it. The other thing that does not run right is subtotals. it
does not recognize the top line as a header, it thinks the first line of
numbers is the header.

I has been a long time sinced I've used Crystal Reports. I used to be that
the reports were locked and didn't easily allow modifications. but you seem
to be having similar problems with databases as well.

Make sure macros are disabled and try again. Try a different printer. Some
formating are not allowed with certain printers.

Do all types of formating stop working?

1) font sizes
2) left allign, center allign, right allign
3) Borders and shading
4) Interior color
5) Font color

Try changing Printers. the printer option may effect the formating.
