Save while I work
 
I remember a time where I could set up Excel to be saving the file in the
background as I worked (different from the current save for auto recovery
functionality that only works after loos of power, etc) and I could close the
file without manually saving changes as I worked and know that if I re-opened
it, I would have the version that was "auto-saved" 5 minutes ago. Is that
capability gone or am I missing how to do it in 2007?

You are right. Auto recovery option is meant for recovering from problems...

I don't have access to Excel 2003 now so can no test but I recall that
functionality was same in Excel 2003... if you auto saved and quit without
saving you got your original file back...

Of course you can have a macro 'auto saving' then you will have the last
save back...

AutoSave add-in has not been available since Excel 2000 version.

Jan Karel Pieterse has an addin called AutoSafe
which doen't alert before saving.

(look for AutoSafe.zip) download version 3.5

It doesn't overwrite the existing workbook when it saves. It saves a timed
copy to a user selectable folder. And when it's done, it either deletes
these backups (or puts them in the recycle bin). And the user can always
restore the backups from the recycle bin.

If you still have access to the AutoSave add-in from Excel 2000 I believe it
does work with 2007................it works with 2002 and 2003

I can send you a copy of Excel 97 AutoSave add-in which I know works well
with 2003 version.

Note: you can FileSave AsToolsGeneral OptionsAlways create a backup
which will leave you with a *.XLK file that is always one version behind the
current workbook.

Autorecovery was added in xl2002 and autosave.xla was removed.

But if you still have a copy of the autosave.xla from xl97 or xl2k, then they'll
work with xl2002+.
