In a remote location make your list with a blank cell at the topname the

Blank Space at the top of a drop down list
 
Assuming the dropdown list id Data Validation list.

Include the blank cell at the top of your listrange.

i.e. list of choices for list is A2:A12

Select A1:A12 for the listrange.
