Hi,

I have a colleague who wants to use the IsBlank formula as follows:

For example, the cells in column A will have some numbers in, or will have
no data in at all.

The formulae have been simplified to help:
column B will look into column A and ask If(IsBlank(A1),"",A1/10)

this works fine.
The problem arises in column C which then asks (If(IsBlank(B1),"",B1*2)

The formula doesn't see cell B1 as blank.

Is there a way to get the formula to see cell B1 as blank?

I have suggested If(B1="","",B1*2), but he doesn't want to use this and
would prefer Excel to see B1 as a blank cell.

Hi Mark,

For Column C why don't you refer to Column A, if Column B is blank then
Column A will also be blank.

I would, but the actual formulae is more complicated than that, I just
simplified it to make it easy to understand what the problem is.

But B1 isn't blank, it contains an empty string.

You could use IF(LEN(B1)=0,"",B1*2) but you can't use ISBLANK() on a cell
that is not blank.

Hi,

Why bother with these tests at all. In B1

=A1/10

In c1

=B1*2

The apply a conditional format to both to turn the Font while if A1 is blank

=$A$1=""
