Deleted columns reset their width to zero

In the course of routine spreadsheet maintenance I delete unused
columns and rows to reset the lower right corner of the spreadsheet,
in an attempt to optimize use of spreadsheet resources and reduce file
size.

In one tab of a particular workbook, when I delete unused columns
their column width resets to zero, hiding them. It only happens in
that one tab: other tabs in the same workbook behave normally.

Don't know if this is a relevant data point: I sent this file to
Europe for use by colleagues there, and some formulas came back
translated into another language (EDATE became EDATUM, for instance).

Anyone seen this before?

Thanks,
Dave O

Any chance the last column (IV) has a zero width?

Are there hidden columns around the column being deleted? That is the only
reason I can think of.

Also have you ever checked the change in file size after deleting few blank
columns?

No, no hidden columns at all. I also copied a column from a blank file
and pasted it into the tab to see if I could overwrite something, and
checked for background VB code. This doesn't affect the spreadsheet at
all (as far as I can tell); I don't like unexplained events in
financial spreadsheets.
