Default Highlighting lock error? help!

Whenever I start excel everthing is fine until i click in the workbook field.
Then from whatever cell I clicked in, the highlighting locks and where i
move the pointer too it highlights and I can not get out of it or click
anywhere on the taskbar up top. Then only way to get out of it is to go to
the task manager and end task.

I have tried the scroll lock and the F8 what else can it be? I have no other
problems in other programs.
