I'm trying to open a file but a browsing message keeps appearing on the
screen and there is a small icon on the file. How do I go about opening this
file?

Try right clicking the icon, and choose to open it with Microsoft Excel

What type of dialog box opens with the small Icon and what does the Icon
look like?
