cannot enter input and cannot stop scroll

Although I'm able to boot excel onto my screen, I often find that I am
unable to input data.

When I try to arrow out I can't move to the next cell. Then, when I use my
mouse to move from one cell to the next the cells get painted(shaded). As
II move my mouse, additional cells are painted over like a continous
scrolling affect.

When call up the Windows Task Master to end the program I'm told that I
cannot end the program. But then a dialogue box comes on which allows me to
end it.

I have tried re-installing the application and even repairing it. The
computer tells me that these attemps have been sucessful but I still have the
same problems.

I have been able to work in Excel about 3 times out of my last 20 attempts
so I'm befuddled when it starts acting up. Please help.

Hi Roger,

that didn't work for me. Did I do it right? I simply pressed F8 while I
was in the worksheet.

By the way, at the risk of seeming ignorant, what is "Extended Mode"? And
why did you think it was the solution? I'm desparate to learn more. Thank
you.

Hi

Pressing F8 puts Excel into Extended mode and EXT appears down near the
bottom right of the Sheet, next to NUM.
Whilst in this mode, as you move your cursor, it anchors the first cell and
extends the selection to the range where you drag your cursor.
It sounded as though what you were experiencing mirrored this condition.
Pressing F8 is a toggle between switching the mode On or Off.
