replacing an * in a field

I'm downloading info & one of the fields is coming in & looks like -0.83*
For some reason, I can't do a find & replace to get rid of the *.
Also, copying the value won't remove the *.
That * is preventing me from doing any kinds of formulas. Its 100k line
items so doing it manually isn't an option.
Any ideas?

replacing an * in a field

A very tiny trick:

look for and replace:
~*
rather than
*
