Error Message in Excel - HELP

I am working on a huge spreadsheet. I keep getting the following message
"Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close". When the file closes
it creates another file with names such as "A397300" which when I try to open
I am told the file format is unrecognized.

I have my worksheet on Autosave, but that does not help.
