Row Number out of Sequence

Hello,

I have received a large spreadsheeet via email. I am using Excel 97 and the
row numbers are completely out of sequence. I don't mean hidden and missing
but actual not in numerical order, eg. 2, 300 34, 400, 490, 35

It has only happened in this one file. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Judith

Perhaps the real row numbers are not displayed, and column A contains
those numbers, suitably formatted to look like the row identifiers.

I would guess that those aren't row numbers, but are numbers in the left
hand column of ordinary cells. Perhaps the row numbers are hidden.

Does Excel 97 have something like:
Tools/ Options/ View/ Row and column headers?
