The rule for freezing panes is.....

Columns to left of and rows above the selected cell will be frozen.

Do not select row 1 to freeze row 1. As you have seen, it will freeze panes
in mid-window.

Select A2 to freeze row 1

Select B2 to freeze row 1 and column A

*NEVER* invoke "Freeze Panes" when the cell in the "A1 Position" is
selected.

Picture a newly opened sheet.
The top, left cell is A1.

Click in A6, then,
<Window <Freeze Panes

You'll see that rows 1 to 5 are frozen ... all well and good!

Now, unfreeze them:
<Window <Unfreeze Panes

Click in A6.

Using the scroll bar on the right, scroll down 5 rows so that A6 is in the
"A1 Position" (top left).

Then:
<Window <Freeze Panes

You see what happens?
That's probably your problem.

Unfreeze the panes.

With A6 in the "A1 Position", click in A7, then freeze panes.
All should be OK now, *BUT* you'll notice that you *can't* display above Row
6.

This is a good procedure to keep headers and/or logos hidden so that more
screen real estate can be utilized,
And at the same time, *allows* these rows to still print (truly hidden rows
*don't* print).

Don't forget ... *never* invoke Freeze Panes when the cell in the A1 screen
position is selected!

Freeze panes
Keep titles in sight as you scroll through worksheets. To freeze titles,
make a selection in the worksheet, and then click Freeze Panes on the Windows
menu.

To freeze titles, do not select the titles themselves. To freeze:

Column titles only Select the first row below the titles.
Row titles only Select the first column to the right.
Both column and row titles Select the cell that is both directly below the
column titles and to the right of the row titles.
To unfreeze panes, on the Window menu, click Unfreeze Panes.

Tip You can freeze panes anywhere, not just below the first row or to the
right of the first column. Click the row below, or the column to the right,
or the cell that is both below and just to the right of whatever information
you want to freeze.
