Trouble opening an XLS. and XLM. file in Microsoft 2000

Hello,
When I attempt to open a file XLS or XLM the excel spreedsheet is all
scrambled. Its seem that everyone that used 2003 doesn't have any problems
but anything older does. Is there a download to be able to open these files
in 2000 version?

xl2003 and xl2k uses the same file format for .xls files. (I'm not sure if
anything is different with .xlm files.)

How are the users who are having trouble opening the files? Do they have
trouble if they open excel, then use file|open to open the files?

If file|open is ok, I'd try:
Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets some of the windows registry to
excel's factory defaults.

They are not able to open excel and the open the file. Our reports are
generated as excel spreedsheets and then placed in a zip file. All I know of
the problem being is they are able to open the files but the text it
scrambled all over the page and is unreadable.
