Is there a way to determine how a cell is formatted. i.e. is it formatted as
1) Text, general, custom 2) Auto row height on or off 3) column width is 3.86
or auto 4) Alignment is General/top 5) Font is arial 8 etc.

Look up the Cell function in the help files.
May give you what you're looking for.

To answer your question # 1:
Click on the word "Format" on the Menu Bar
then click on the word ""Cells..."
then click on the "Number" tab
the current category being used will be lightlighed in dark blue

To answer your question #2 and 3:
Click on the word "Format" on the Menu Bar
then click on either Row or Column
then click on either "Height" or "Width"

To answer your question #4:
Click on the word "Format" on the Menu Bar
then click on the word "Cells..."
then click on the "Alignment" tab
then click on the upsidedown little black triangle
that is to the right of the white space below the word "Vertical:"
then current alignment being used will be highlighted in dark blue

To answer your #5 question:
Click on the word "Format" on the Menu Bar
then click on the word "Cells..."
then click on the "Font" tab
the current font type and size will be highlighted in dark blue
