Unmerging A Named Range

Greetings,

I have unmerged almost all of my merged cells, except 4. These four
are 1 row tall (height set to 75) and 80 columns wide (columns set to
0.44 wide).

Problem: These are used as memo fields. As such I have no idea how
much or how little is going to be typed in. I have a border around
this area to make it look like a merged cell, but that is as far as it
goes.

Is there anyway to get the text typed into the first cell to bleed
over the other 79 columns and wrap to the next line inside the tall
row? I would really like to have this area formatted to display the
text from the top left corner and go to the end of the bordered area
and the wrap to the next line and the next line until the text runs
out. If I leave them merged they work fine.

There is another problem (#2) with what used to be description labels
for phone numbers. There were 12 columns set aside for telephone
numbers, but I rarely used more then 2, the most I ever used in one
record was 4. But never the same 4 hence the 12 different columns.
It was brought to my attention that I could condense these 12 to 4 by
using an extra column to hold what the name of the phone was instead
of 12 columns to hold the names whether I used those columns of not.
The problem is actually the similar to the first in that I would like
to use a validation drop down to hold all of the possible telephone
names and just choose one from that list. The named range is only one
cell wide unless I merge the cells there as well.

So the question is, is there any way to use these cells without
merging them?

Any insights, hints, links, thoughts or other help would be
appreciated.
