F2 is normally Edit cell in the formula line, unless of course someone
loaded some kind of Hotkey manager in Windows and assigned Word to F2.

It could also be a macro in excel that steals that F2 function.

I'd try this:

close excel
Open excel in safe mode:
windows|start button|Run
type this and hit enter
excel /safe

Then try the F2 button.

If it workw ok, then you could do some detective work to find the culprit.

Chip Pearson has some notes on how to diagnose startup errors:

And Jan Karel Pieterse has more notes:

Dunno whether this will help, but the problem also occurs on my
Logitech keyboard.
I can correct it back to normal function mode via a key at the top of
the keyboard named "F Mode".

I was having this problem as well - and after reading the reply from koitaki
posted on 7/17, I realized the problem could be my new Logitech Keyboard. My
F2 worked in Excel prior to using the new keyboard. I believe I must have
accidentally turned off the F-function keys - and so everytime I tried to
edit something in Excel, it would jump to WORD. Drove me insane. So thanks to
koitaki, and the tip about the F-Mode key on the keyboard, I am back in
business. I hope you are too.
Cheers.
