I want to keep the top five rows and the total row at the bottom visible and
scroll up and down in the middle, is this possible?

Click on the cell from which it whould freeze then go to windows on top
select freeze panes. This should work

Praveen's will get your top rows and left hand columns locked on screen but
to see the total row at the bottom you'll have to split the screen. At the
top of the vertical scroll bar is the split pane icon. When the mouse
pointer is hovering above it your mouse pointer is a double line horizontal
bar with up/down arrows. Click and drag the bar down to the location where
you want to display total rows.

Then click in the bottom window and bring your total rows into view.

To remove the split bar just double-click on it, or drag it back to its
original location at the top of the screen.

I knew about freezing and how to do that but thank you anyway Praveen, the
split is really useful Kevin but I cannot get them to work together!

What I'm trying to do is leave my column headings at the top and my totals
at the bottom and scroll up and down with the roads in between, if I split
the screen and then apply a freeze to keep the top still it doesn't work.

What seems to happen is whichever selection I make last (freeze or split)
that is the option I then have to use from that point onwards, any idea how I
can make them both work together?

There's a tool you can add to your toolbars called the Camera tool and it
lets you select a range of cells and take a picture of the selected cells.
You can then click in the worksheet where you want to see the picture. The
cool thing about the tool is that the picture is dynamically updated as data
changes, so you see updates as they occur.

Click VIEW in the menu, and select TOOLBARS and select CUSTOMIZE. Click the
COMMANDS tab in the dialog box and from the CATEGORIES column click TOOLS.
In the COMMANDS column scroll down until you see the option named CAMERA.
It's icon looks like, you guessed it, a little camera and click and drag it
to the toolbar of you choice (formatting, standard, whatever...).

To use the tool select the range you want to take a picture of (your formula
cells) and click the camera tool. The pointer will becomes a crosshair
pointer. Move to the location where you want to place the picture and click
to insert the picture.

If I remember correctly, the PICTURE toolbar will automatically display and
you can add additional formatting if you want. This picture will
automatically update as your formulas recalc.

Hi

You could tackle the problem another way.
Insert a new row at the to of your screen, and put the Totals there.
Then, a simple Freeze panes will achieve what you want

Perhaps, make that row a different colour, to stand out, and put box
characters around the cells.

thanks Kevin and Roger, both solutions are excellent.

I have to admit I was thinking of something more along the line of Kevin's
option but that's only because (for some bizarre reason?) I didn't think of
Roger's easier option, even I could I have worked out had to do that if
I'd only thought about it a bit more!

Yes, it is possible to freeze the top five rows and the total row at the bottom of your spreadsheet while scrolling through the middle section. Here's how you can do it:

1. Open your Excel spreadsheet.
2. Select the row below the fifth row that you want to freeze. In this case, it would be the sixth row.
3. Click on the "View" tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
4. Click on the "Freeze Panes" dropdown menu.
5. Select "Freeze Panes" from the dropdown menu.
6. Now, the top five rows will be frozen and will remain visible as you scroll through the middle section of your spreadsheet.
7. To also freeze the total row at the bottom, select the row above the total row.
8. Click on the "View" tab in the ribbon at the top of the screen.
9. Click on the "Freeze Panes" dropdown menu.
10. Select "Freeze Panes" from the dropdown menu.
11. Now, the top five rows and the total row will be frozen and will remain visible as you scroll through the middle section of your spreadsheet.

That's it! You can now scroll through the middle section of your spreadsheet while keeping the top five rows and the total row at the bottom visible.
