Slow speed opening XLSM compared to XLS
 

I have a file about 3Mb in the "wonderful" Vs7 format. ie with the XLSM
extension. It takes about 1 minute to open up, and then is quite sluggish
and prone to breakdown.

I saved it as an XLS file, and remarkably, it saved it with a few Kbs less,
but opens in less than 2 seconds!

I thought the new version was supposed to make smaller files and work
faster.

I have a 2.66MHz Celron with 1Gb ram running on XP Pro.

Such is life in Office 2007? Almost everyone switching to it that has taken
the time to comment about it has the general impression that it's slower than
previous versions (of Excel). And with that CPU/RAM setup, you don't even
want to think about upgrading that machine to Vista.

Also, here are a couple of links to some recent discussions of speed issues
and Office/Excel 2007 that may give you some ideas of other areas to look
into, such as DDE settings and 3rd party, seemingly unrelated applications,
and/or anti-virus tools being potential culprits in this situation:

Good advice in that forum: it's moderated by two MSFT MVPs and lots of sharp

only got 1 of 4 machines running Vista, and it was one specifically built to
be able to handle Vista Ultimate. Actually pretty stable system. Has Office
2007 on it also: Intel Core-Duo 6600 (2.4GHz) with 2GB RAM along with 4GB
flash as "ReadyBoost" RAM.

PS I don't know what "flash as "ReadyBoost" RAM" is, but it sounds like it
ups your RAM besides the MB ram. If so, must investigate!

ReadyBoost is kind of a Vista thing. It allows you to attach a 'thumb drive'
type USB device to the system and Vista will use it for swap file and other
temporary operations. Faster than going to the hard drive. Wikipedia has a
good writeup about it:

If (when) you end up with a Vista system, look for USB devices marked as
suitable to use for a ReadyBoost device. Be sure to read the section on
"Performance" on the Wikipedia page.
