Column widths reset to default when pasted into a new work book

I am a forced convert to excel from lotus. When I copy one worksheet to
another 2 things happen in excel that don't happen in lotus.

1. The column widths change to the default width of the new worksheet
dispite of the "All" radio button being on in the "paste special" dailog box
and

2. The paste function is only good for one worksheet, I.E. I can't paste one
copied worksheet into several new worksheets. The copy ratio is one copy to
one paste.

Is this normal for excel?
Is there a way to change the settings or user preferences to modify this
bothersome bit of functionality
