excel 2007- when selecting a range to edit, it has no highlight

When I select a range to edit, ( either by mouse or by shift+Arrow keys)
the selected is not highlighted. The row and column headers change colors but
the selected range does not. I am still getting used to the newer version and
I wonder if I have toggled this feature off somehow.
This appears to only be a problem if the cell color is white
(Automatic). If I pass over an altered color ( say, with a gray background)
cell or group of cells, then I can see the Higlighting taking place as they
are highlighted.
