Why is most of the sheets gray and unaccessible?
 

I have an Excel book made by others, where the surroundings (to the right
and below) of the sheets are grey and unaccessible. The sheets are not
protected. There is nothing wrong with it, on the contrary it is quite nice.
But what has been done to achieve this appearance?
