Excel freezes with certain operation

When I select a cell and type a name in the Name Box and then use that name
in a formula, simply enclosed in brackets like
=(Name1)
Excel freezes if I click on any part of the Name1 and press F9 (to show the
value for that cell).
If I select the whole of the Name1, there is no problem.

Any ideas? Is this a general glitch with the program?

Rob

Hi Rob,

I cannot duplicate the problem on my system.
What version and update of Excel are you using?

Thanks for your response Charles.

I have Vs2007 SP1 installed on WindowsXP Pro on a 2.66 Celeron with 1Gb mem.

It doesn't matter if there are values in any cells or not. ie I just paste
into A1 (or create) = B1+C1 on a blank freshly opened worksheet, click
between the C and 1 and press F9, then Excel immediately hangs. All I can
do then is click the big X to close Excel and a message appears saying that
"MS Excel has encountered a problem and cannot Exit.......etc".
(If I highlight all of B1 or, all of C1 or, the total formula, then there is
no problem.)

Now, I don't usually do it this way to check whether part of a formula is
evaluating correctly, as I would normally select a section, eg within a
larger nested formula. I was just trying to see what happened if I did just
click and not highlight before pressing F9.

OK: also happens on my system with Excel 2007, but not with older versions,
looks like a bug to me.

Thanks Charles, I thought & hoped, it would be. One of the MANY bugs in this
version. Me thinks hardly worth worrying about though. I'm sure there'll
be many more much more annoying and serious to contend with, and new ones
when the next version appears :-)

I guess it stand to reason that if we pay too much attention to our looks,
our health may suffer.
I wonder if the number of bells and whistles is directly proportionate to
the reduction in robustness.
