"alt + enter" closes the worksheet

I opened a workbook and pressed "alt+enter" straight away, the result was the
workbook gets closed.
Is this an excel "feature"?
I have searched for the "alt+enter" combination, but all the results point
to inserting a line break in a cell.
Anyone, any ideas, please?

Just tinkered here in xl03

Seems like your
.. pressed "alt+enter" straight away ..

opens a new book. But it doesn't close your book (just gets "hidden"). You
can see/go to your other book via clicking Window choose the book from
dropdown

In Edit mode, when you double-click into a cell to type something,
then pressing alt+enter will break for a new line

Thanks for the note.
That was my first thought.
I have opened two workbooks, press "alt+enter" (without selecting any cells)
and the workbook closes (does not ask for "Save").
I then, click on "window" menu , and use the drop down to select the
workbook but it is not there.
I even tried "window" -- "Arrange" but the same end result: The workbook
is not "hidden".
By the way, I know about "alt+enter" for adding break lines.
Any other thoughts...

Can you duplicate the issue?

Can you duplicate the issue?
No. It opens a new book, as mentioned in my 1st response. When a book is
opened, there would already be a cell selected. Pressing alt+enter simply
opens a new book for me.

If you open excel in safe mode:

Close excel
windows start button|Run
type:
excel /safe

do you get the same results when you hit alt-enter?

If you don't, then you might have a macro that's intercepting the alt-enter and
doing what it wants to do. (Starting in safe mode will avoid this macro.)

If the problem goes away, are you ready to do some detective work to find out
the culprit?

Chip Pearson has some notes on how to diagnose startup errors:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

And Jan Karel Pieterse has more notes:
http://www.jkp-ads.com/Articles/StartupProblems.asp

Essentially, you'll turn off all the addins/startup workbooks and then open
excel. And then turn on each addin (closing and reopening) one at a time to
find the culprit.

On my Excel 2003 open a workbook, make no changes then hit Alt + Enter in
non-edit mode closes the workbook with no save or message.

Opened VBE and no project shows up so book is not just hidden.

Thanks for your input. I have learned about Excel /safe (I am assuming it
works with all MS apps).
I did as you suggested, and I could repeat the issue. I open a workbook,
did not click on anything, press "alt+enter" and workbook is closed without
prompts..

Gord,
Bizarre! Just tried it out on my home pc. Earlier attempts were on a laptop.
Pressing alt+enter opens a new book, as before. Consistent behaviour for me
it seems <g.
