long dates before 1900

I am entering dates from the 1800's and 1900's. I want to produce dates as '
1 Mar 1845'. How can I do this?

Thanks in advance

Excel does not recognize dates before 1900 as valid dates and will treat them as
text.

To work around this see John Walkenbach's site.
