repeating characters - What gives?

A co-worker yesterday showed me in an excel file they were working how that
in a blank cell after they entered, say "cat" (without the quote marks)
the same cell showed:

catcatcatcatcatcat

I deleted the cells contents - re-enterd, same results
I formatted as General, same results;
I gave up...
Any Other ideas as to what to try??
Tks in Advance..
