How to hide outline navigation panel

When I have an outline consisting of grouped rows, there is an outline
navigation panel along the left hand side. The user expands or
collapses grouped rows using buttons on this navigation panel. Is
there a way to hide this navigation panel? Thanks.

I don't suppose there is a way to turn off visibility of the
outline symbols for row groups while still showing them for the
column groups (and vice-versa)?

Thanks anyway. Your solution above deals with most of the
question.
