Locking column widths

Every time I auto fit one column width, other widths in the worksheets
change. How do I lock the formatting of cells, but not the data, especially
the column widths? I'm using Excel 2003.

Unlock the cells (format|cells|Protection tab) that you want to be able to
change.

Then protect the sheet (tools|Protection|protect sheet).

It shouldn't do that. How are you doing the autofit? If you select one
column and use Format/ Column/ Autofit Selection, it should change only that
column.
