what is compatibility mode and how do you get it off? it wont let me type in
the cells.

Compatibility mode is described at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...patibilityMode,
but I doubt whether that's what's stopping you typing in the cells. Have
you checked the protection of the worksheet?
