Default excel is opening the same file three to five times

When I open an Excel file, it will automatically open it 3-5 times. any
ideas on how to stop this?

Is this happening with all Excel files? If it's only happening to a
particular workbook you may have opened multiple window of the same file.

Check the title bar and if the title bar displays FileName:1, or FileName:2
you have multiple windows opened. Click the CLOSE WINDOW button (the small x
to the right of the menu) to close each window until all extra version have
been closed.
