Multiple Excel Instances & Paste Special
 

Currently, when I open multiple spreadsheets, they open in different
instances of excel. As a result (i believe), I cannot paste special values (
in the way they would if they were in the same instance). I have tried
checking and unchecking "ignore other applications", "windows in taskbar".

I use the transpose, format, etc quite often. I recently had Excel 2003 and
2007 installed on the same computer. This issue arose when i removed 2007.
Since then, I have reinstalled 2003, but the problem still persists.

You could always open a single instance of excel, then use File|Open to open the
other workbooks.

Or you could try to fix windows/excel so that when you double click on an excel
file, it won't open a second instance.

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets some of the windows registry to
excel's factory defaults.

Maybe one of these will work for you.

I have tried all the suggestions, but the files are still opening in separate
instances with the exception of File|open. I would really like to try and
restore excel so my spreadsheets open in single instances once again.

I simply do not understand why it started to behave this way! Are there any
other options that are open to me that i can try?

Don't know why the regserver steps won't work for you.

When you run the regserver command do you get any message that configuration is
starting?

Any error message?

If yes and no there is another option available.

Go to StartSettingsControl PanelFolder OptionsFile Types

If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced"OpenEdit.

In Command line the path should be similar to this....

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE" /e

You must have the double quotes and the <space/e prevents a new blank book from
opening.

Below have "use DDE" checked and this in the DDE message box....[open("%1")]

Application should read "Excel"(no quotes)

One of these techniques has worked for lots and lots of people (but not all for
some reason).

Before you go to the lengths that Gord describes in his post, you may want to
try both of those suggestions once more. Maybe you made a mistake the first
time????
