Default Protect sheet with permissions?

I want to protect the sheet, but allow for certain users to have permission
to edit certain cells I allow.

I selected the ranges I would like for users to be able to edit, I added
myself as a user, then I protected the sheet.

When the sheet is protected I can't select the cells I wanted for users to
be able to edit while the sheet is protected.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you.

To "free up" cells from the protection........select them Right-click
Format Cells ProtectionTab uncheck the LOCKED box...........then go back
and Protect the sheet. These cells will be editable, the rest will not.
