Slow opening files
I have a computer on my network that has started taking a good 10 seconds or
longer to open word or excel files when double clicking on the file from Windows Explorer or even right off the desktop. When using file/open within word or excel, the file opens before you can even blink and word and excel themselves startup just as quick when opening the program. I've tried disabling my virusscan (McAfee Enterprise 8.5) with no change. I've also confirmed that the google toolbar isn't installed and all network printers are connected (two things I noticed when searching on the problem). I have also ran a repair on Office to no avail. All other applications work fine. I can open a pdf from windows explorer or from the desktop and it opens within a second. This is a fairly new Dell D630 laptop with 2Gb of ram so speed of the computer is not an issue. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks... -- Mike |

Check Task manager for CISVC.EXE. Kill task and see if this improves the
time it takes to open files. If so, the go into services and turn of Indexing Service. See website http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsO...96608&SiteID=2 Indexing service is known to slow down opening all Microsoft products. Every computer that I know of running the process cisvc.exe was running slow.
Files were taking up to 45 seconds to open. Make sure the process was killed before trying to open the file a second time. Perhaps consider this, if the problem is ONLY when you double-click on a
file to open it, the problem is likely due to DDE. It can be fixed by reinstalling, OR this workaround. Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types, scroll down to and select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Excel files), click Advanced, select Open entry, click the edit Button. Now uncheck "Use DDE" and then put your cursor in the Application box, arrow all the way to the right and put in "%1" (include the quote marks), IF there is /dde remove it. Then OK you way out. Things should work quickly again. Mike Brearley wrote: No change.... just as an FYI, we're using Office 2003 "Joel" wrote in message ... Check Task manager for CISVC.EXE. The cisvc.exe process is not running and the files are still taking 10-20
seconds to open when double clicking on them. When opening via file/open from word or excel, they open quickly. -- Mike "Joel" wrote in message ...
