What kind of protection is this?

I am looking at a worksheet that has some kind of protection imposed.
I am curious about what kind of protection has been set.

I can select the cell (dark border around the cell) and see the value
of the formula. But when I select the cell, I cannot see the formula.

I have tried to duplicate the protection security in my own worksheet
by using ToolsProtection. But I have not stumbled onto the right
combination of options that duplicate that behavior exactly -- namely
that allows me to select the cell, but no see the formula.

Any insights?

Unprotect the worksheet
Lock the cell using:
Format|Cell|protection tab|check Locked and hidden
Protect the worksheet
