Default Merge cell icon is inactive

In one of my excel files in excel 2002, i always find the merge cell icon is
inactive. may i know the reason why and how to bring it back to be active.

Default Merge cell icon is inactive

Hi,

If the selected cells are already merged you will find the icon inactive.

As a second thought if you mean to see the icon in the toolbar, then go to
Toolbar options/Add remove buttons/formatting/then click merge and
center/done.
This will enable you to see the icon on the toolbar itself and there is no
need to right click on the selected cell and go to format
cell/allignement/merge cells.
