Why does it take so long?

Does anyone have any suggestions on why it takes so long to link cells from
different files?
I get a table 10 columns x 5000 rows, which is directly linked to another
file.
Does anyone have any suggestions why it takes more than 10 mins to update
all the linked cells? or Does it have any issues on memory limitation?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

If you open the "sending" files, xl should recalc lots faster.

If your sending files are on a network drive, then maybe you could copy them to
a folder on your local harddrive.

I've found that Macros of any size are incredibly slow, even with 4GB
64bit (XP as well as Vista) with a 3GHz Intel processor, 1066FSB.
With 4GB memory Performance Monitor says CPU 100%, Memory
use 30-50%, and few HD accesses. So it's not memory bound.

I assume it is because Excel runs/installs as a 32bit application.
I would have thought that MS at least would be capable of
writing 64bit applications, seemingly not.

Thank everyone for any suggestions

Could you please tell me what the "sending" file mean? Does it refer to the
source file, which data is retrieved from?

The source file includes a table 10 columns x 5000 rows with a lot of
formula, which takes 3 hours to finish all the calculation. I need to
perform another calculation based on this table rather than re-caluate all
the formula in each cells again, therefore, I retrieve the result from the
source file and perform a simple calculation, rather than redo all the
calculation again, which takes another 3 hours.

Do you have any suggestions on increasing the time on re-calculation?
Thank everyone very much for any suggestion

I meant the file where the data resides.

I don't have any suggestions except for the ones I gave before.

Thank you for your suggestions
The sending files are on my local harddrive, if the sending file is opened,
it will perform re-calculation, and it will take longer than without opening
it.

Does anyone have any more suggestions?
