filename.xls:1 and filename.xls:2
 

What would cause the following to happen?

When you click on Window -- you see a listing for the name of the
spreadsheet.xls:1 and then name of the spreadsheet.xls:2

Trying to make that stop and just have one file.

You have 2 windows open for the same file: WindowNew Window

I'm guessing that when you click the Window menu, sometimes New Window gets
clicked automatically.

If 2 windows for the same file open automatically when you open the file,
maybe it is because it is a MS XL Workspace (*.xlw) and it was saved that
way.

In xl2003, you can create a new window via:
Window|New Window

Then the windows can be arranged so that you can see both (Window|Arrange).

It can be very useful when you have to see a different worksheet--or even a
different portion of the same worksheet.

If you don't want these multiple "views", you can select the window to close,
then hit ctrl-f4.

Remember to save the workbook the way you like.

Someone inadvertently went to WindowNew Window

Click on the "x" to close one of these windows then save the remaining one.

You just have two windows open on the same file. Use the close window
icon (X) in the top right corner of the file window (NOT the Excel
window) to close one of them, and then save the file so that it
doesn't happen next time you open it.

Thanks for getting back to me. I am drawing a blank as to why this
does this (trying to support one of my users).

1. I did not create the file.

2. I double-checked; it is not an *.xlw file. But the two windows do
open automatically.

My user got sent the file in email by someone.

Any ideas?

Thank you very much everyone... wow; got alot of responses.

Lack of sleep will do that to ya. I just didn't know HOW it got that
way in the first place. Yes, probably the individual sending the file
inadvertantly clicked on Window, New Window.

As I learned from the other posts, it does not need to be an *.xlw file in
order for both windows to open when the file is opened.

If the file is saved with 2 windows open, it will open both windows when the
file is opened.

Close one of the windows and then save the file. That should correct the
problem.
