initializing root folder to display

IN excel 2007 when I attempt to open a drive to save or open a file I get a
message "initializing root folder to display" with a status bar. When
completed I can see the folders but am unable to open any folders. If I can
cancel and repeat, then I do not get this message.
I have seen a few posts saying I should delete maped drives that are not
connected right now. This is a problem as I work on a domain and need access
to these drives. Are there any ideas how to fix this?

Perhaps, you have a network location that is mapped? It usually does this
when the folders are not connected.

Open My Computer and see if you can re-connect to the particular folder
[that may be] giving you problems.
