It takes two full minutes to open existing files in Office 2003
 
It takes 2 minutes to open existing files in Excel and Word. This began a
few weeks ago. All other functions work well and speed within the files is
excellent.

I'm not sure if this will help in MSWord--if it doesn't, you may want to ask in
an MSWord forum.

If it's just your pc, how about a silly guess?

Clean up your windows temp folder.

Close excel
windows start button|Run
%temp%
is a quick way to get there.
