Opening Excel 2003 File

I have a file saved correct. For example the file name is water.xls.

When I open the file water.xls it opens and I can edit it. However, the file
name has changed to water1 (without .xls). I can reopen water.xls, while
water1 is open and the new name is water2 (without .xls). This can go on and
on.

The file in not protected and I get no error messages. This only happens in
excel.

Any thoughts of how to get the file name back to water.xls when it is opened?

If you open excel and then use File|Open to open the file, does it work ok?

I'm guessing that you're doubleclicking on water.xls in windows explorer.

If I'm right...

Saved from a previous post:

If it's a .xlt file (a template), then this is the behavior you want. The
purpose of a template is so you can create a new workbook based on that
template.

If it's a .xls file...

The first thing that I'd try is to reregister excel to set it back to factory
defaults.

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

Then test it out.

If that doesn't work...

Close excel
start windows explorer
tools|folder options|file types tab
scroll down to the xls extension (microsoft excel worksheet)
click the advanced button
click on the Open item in the Actions box
click set as default
(ok your way out)

If the default action was set to New (bolded indicates default), then that could
have been your problem.
