Windows XP Pro Ed._Desktop window at startup is too small

When Windows boots up, the desktop window after startup is minimized (roughly
50%). Basically, I see the same desktop view, but I have a black empty space
that frames the desktop window. I see the same view no matter which program
I'm in. I went into settings and adjusted the display, but it did not change
the view...I want to be able to expand the window so it fits my monitor size.
This change was precipated by me creating a new folder onto my desktop,
while simutaneously selecting and copying files from another folder to move
to the desktop. Does anyone know why this happened, and how to resolve?
Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

This is not affected by Excel. Perhaps you could ask for help in the
Windows XP group?
