Excel 2007 formulas acting weird

I opened my Excel just now to my monthly budget (from the template that I
downloaded). And I added a dollar amount to the spreadsheet, but for some
reason, it didn't take. So I experimented, I opened another template, and did
the same thing, still nothing, BUT, when I saved it, only THEN did it the
formula work. I hope someone can understand what I'm saying. In other words,
the formulas aren't working when they're supposed to. When I add or take away
a number, since it's a template and the formulas are already there, it's
supposed to act accordingly, but it's not. Please help.
