1) From Ribbon use Insert; locate the Text group; use Symbol; locate degree
(or other symbol) in dialog and click ok
OR
2) In the method above you will see that the ASCII value for the degree
symbol is 0176. SO hold down ALT key and type 0176 on the number pad (not
the number of top row of 'typewriter' section of keyboard)

You may be tempted to use ALT+0186 which gives a large º but in Calibri font
it display as a superscript zero with an underline ("zeroeth")
